A Brief History of the Yoga

  • The earliest history of the yoga references come from four shastras known as the Vedas.

Discovery Of History of the Yoga.

Yoga Sutras 200 CE

  • Patanajali writes Yoga Sutras which lay out the eightfold path of yoga.
  • His teachings are the first recorded record of how to practice yoga, and the basic activities and steps that must be followed.
  • To achieve enlightenment are where the daily day starts to recognize yoga as an eight-limbed process.

Tantra Yoga 800 CE

  • Yoga masters continued to practice a few centuries after Patanjali and stepped away from The Vedas teachings and established Tantra yoga.
  • This yoga style promotes the connection between mental and physical bodies to attain enlightenment.
  • Yogis practiced this style during this period, helping to extend life and cleanse the physical body.
  • This time is important because the change from yoga is primarily mental and emotional, and a path to transform the mind into a more physical practice.

Hatha Yoga 14th Century

The Hatha Yoga Pradipika is written which beings are meant to set out the yoga practice as you can know it with 16 poses of yoga , meditation and pranayama. It is the first time you’ve looked other than sitting facile. This is a text now widely read by yogis and known as the origin of Hatha yoga.


Yoga Comes to America 19th Century

  • Yoga is coming over to America. The late 1800s-1900s is most widely mentioned as yoga comes to the West by Swami Vivekananda.
  • A Hindu monk who visited Europe and the United States to spread knowledge of yoga and the sutras.
  • This was after this that other East gurus and teachers began spreading their teachings and delighting people
  • With their physical practice that yoga really started spreading to the United States.
  • This is where you start seeing a spike in Hatha yoga, and very physical activities.

Yoga Popularity Spreads 21st Century

  • Around this time the popularity of yoga has grown, and almost 20 million people are practicing yoga in the United States around 2011. It is during this period as well.
  • That clinical research on the mental, physical , and emotional benefits of yoga only further accelerate the popularity of the practice.
  • While you can still find yoga classes nearly everywhere you look today.
  • Recognizing the rich and ancient history behind the practice is significant, and continuing to learn yoga from the past to enrich and fulfill your practice;
  • You must always have appreciation for the teachers who have practiced and taught yoga for thousands of years, and introduced you to the practice you have come to learn and enjoy, in order to pursue deeper meaning and purpose on your mats.
