The Iyengar approach improves strength , stamina and maximum body balance, as well as stability and relaxation. The Iyengar approach produces self-consciousness, rational assessment and profound inner thought. At the beginning, standing poses are emphasized to create strength and ease of movement, promote general stamina and strengthen breathing, flexibility and balance.

Deep relaxing poses are often implemented from the outset. Gradually, it incorporates sitting and reclining styles, forward turns, inversions, backbends, loops, arm rests and floating sequences.

What is unique about Iyengar yoga?

What sets Iyengar yoga apart is the very high degree of care paid to alignment. Props can be used for raising visibility and making poses public. Often, in a flow-style class we keep the poses longer than students would be accustomed to. There is a concentration on action but also learning how to remain in the body peacefully.

A further defining factor is the variety of work. We ‘re not performing a single series every day. That’s the case for other common yoga styles where there may be a constant series repeated every day. And if we do replicate some of the same poses, the sequence gives a lot of variety. That helps, in my experience, to avoid injury and overuse. Its approach is in essence therapeutic. That is an enormous dimension of the profession.

Is there a distinctive pose or pose style, exclusive to Iyengar yoga?

I don’t know of a pose we ‘re doing in Iyengar alone that’s not performed in any other designs. But in our practice the headstand and shoulder stand are genuinely essential poses. In other Yoga forms, they are not always trained. We have options for those not in a position to do them.If someone comes to an Iyengar class, they know there will be some taught inverted pose. All of us don’t need people to do them but we’re trying to make them safe and available. We insist on a yoga blanket to prevent the neck from being overstretched. Iyengar yoga is very patient and attentive.
